Northwest Suburban Urologists History

Northwest Suburban Urologists has a long and distinguished history. Dr. Barrett and Dr. Calams were practicing at Lutheran General Hospital when it first opened its doors in 1959. In 1968, after completing his residency at Cook County Hospital, Dr. Donald Norris joined Dr. Barrett and Dr. Calams and Northwest Suburban Urologists was formed. Dr. Marc Rubenstein completed his residency from Washington University in St. Louis and joined the practice in 1980.

The physician surgeons of Northwest Suburban Urology have been pioneers in the introduction of new technology and new techniques which are now common. They were the first in the Midwest to perform a percutaneous nephrolithomy, utilitilizing telescopes and sound waves to destroy kidney stones and avoided the need for a large incisions. Dr. Marc Rubenstein and Dr. Donald Norris were among the first to introduce extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to the Chicago area. They founded United Shockwave Centers which continues their standard of excellence. These techniques continue to be the current standard of care for the treatment of kidney stones.

Dr. Ronald Lee completed his residency at the University of Michigan and a fellowship in male infertility at Baylor University in 1984. After a brief stay as an attending at Yale University, he joined the practice in 1986 and continues to be one of the few fellowship trained infertility specialists in Chicago metropolitan area.

In 1990, Dr. Jeffrey Norris began using lasers to treat benign diseases of the prostate and subsequently published a major article on laser treatment of the prostate in the country while still completing his residency. In 1998 Dr. Jeffrey Norris joined the practice after completing a fellowship in female Urology and Voiding Dysfunction at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Narendra Narepalem joined the practice after completing his residency in 2001 at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr Narepalem and Dr. Jeffrey Norris performed the first laparoscopic nephrectomy in private institution in Chicago in 2001 and shortly thereafter the first laparoscopic partial nephrectomy in a private institution in 2002.

Dr. Gordon Gluckman completed his residency in 1995 at the University of San Francisco. Dr. Gluckman and Dr. Narepalem were among the first in the country to perform a robotic nephrectomy and a partial robotic partial nephrectomy at Lutheran General Hospital in 2007. They performed the first robotic radical cystectomy (removal of the bladder and surrounding organs) and continue to be among the only independent urologists who continue to practice this innovative procedure in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Dr. Scott Tiplitsky has joined the practice and has extensive training in all aspects of urology, including urologic oncology, stone disease, incontinence, BPH, and erectile dysfunction. He has a special interest in treating male erectile dysfunction.
