Post Prostate Biopsy

The following is a guide to help you care for yourself following a transrectal biopsy of the prostate.

There are several conditions, which you should be aware of following the biopsy. If any of the following occur please call the office or go to the local emergency room.

  • Do not take any aspirin unless specified by your physician for approximately 2 days following the biopsy. You may experience some discomfort following the procedure, Tylenol may be taken to help alleviate your discomfort. If the pain becomes severe, please contact the office.
  • Bleeding irregularities: Do not become alarmed if you notice some blood following the procedure. The blood may appear in the rectum, urine, and or in the semen. This is normal and may last up to 1 month, on and off. However, if the bleeding becomes excessive, prolonged, or if you pass Blood clots, please contact the office.
  • Finish taking the remaining antibiotics. If you run a fever of over 100 F after Your medication is finished, please contact the office, because you will need additional antibiotics. Watch for a fever for approximately 2 weeks following the procedure.
  • Drink plenty of liquids following the biopsy. If you start experiencing Pressure in the lower abdomen and are unable to urinate, contact the Office immediately.
  • Abstain from alcoholic beverages for 1 week.
  • Abstain from sexual activity for 1 week.
  • Abstain from exercise and or difficult labor for 1 week.
